Warning: coup de coeur!
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Caroline Shaw began studying the violin at the age of two and started composing as a child.
Transcending distinctions of genre and medium, Shaw’s compositional style is characterized by a highly personal blend of historical and contemporary influences. The artist delights in imagining a unique sonic world, playing with instrumental textures as well as vocal timbres (breaths, whispers, shrill sounds, and floating tones). Beneath its apparent simplicity, her work displays great formal sophistication. The composer has a deep love for chamber music, and it shows—and can be heard.
Shaw is the youngest recipient of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Music, and she has won several Grammy Awards as well as an honorary doctorate from Yale University. She is a producer, composer, violinist, and singer with an exceptional voice.

She regularly collaborates with the brilliant Attacca Quartet, with whom she has recorded two beautiful CDs for the Nonesuch label: Orange and Evergreen. The pieces “Entr’acte,” “Nimrod,” and “Plan et Elevation” are now part of the repertoire of the world’s leading string quartets.
We look forward to experiencing “Entr’acte,” performed by the Tana Quartet, on November 8 at the Tournai Conservatory!
